Football News: Arsenal begins the Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace
The 2022-23 Premier League kicked off with Arsenal defeating Crystal Palace 4-2 in the first match of the season at Selhurst Park Stadium on August 6, 2022
The same lineup as the pre-season clash against Sevilla was named by Mikel Arteta, with William Saliba, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus making their Premier League debuts for Arsenal.
Arsenal began dominating from the beginning of the match. Bukayo Saka sent a deep cross to unmarked Oleksandr Zinchenko at the far post. He headed the ball across the goal.
The ball went too high for Thomas Partey, but Gabriel Martinelli was at the right spot to tap it under Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita to give the visitors a 1-0 lead
Arsenal had a bright start to the match and took an early 1-0 lead, while Crystal Palace found its rhythm in the last ten minutes of the first half.
Odsonne Edouard got close to equalizing the score, but Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale denied him the opportunity in a moment of goalkeeping brilliance.
Crystal Palace appeared more dominant in the second half. However, an own goal by English defender Marc Guehi doubled the lead for Arsenal with just five minutes left in the game.
Eddie Nketiah made an excellent run from left to right and passed the ball to Bukayo Saka. The 20-year-old English midfielder sent a cross to Vicente Guaita, but the ball went directly into the goal following a deflection off Marc Guehi to secure a 2-0 victory for Arsenal.
The victory made Mikel Arteta the second fastest manager to win 50 Premier League matches for Arsenal. He achieved the feat in 98 matches, four more than the quickest record by Arsène Wenger.
William Saliba silences the sceptics
William Saliba silenced the sceptics with a sensational performance as he proved his worth on the pitch with a Man of the Match performance in his debut match for Arsenal.
The statistics of the 21-year-old French defender were exceptional. He won three duels, made six clearances, completed 49 passes with an accuracy of 94%, made seven ball recoveries and completed 100% of the take-on and aerial duels.
After the victory, William Saliba said, “It’s a long time I’ve waited for this moment. I am so happy to start my first game with a win and a clean sheet.”
