Tennis News: Nick Kyrgios Pulls Out of Atlanta Open Singles with Knee Problem
Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios was looking forward to participating in this week's Atlanta Open, but he was forced to pull out at the last minute due to an injury
The Australian was all set to play German Peter Gojowczyk in the opener, but Kyrgios showed up at the court moments before the match was to begin, announcing the news.
He can't compete in the tournament due to a lingering knee issue. "First of all, I just want to say I'm extremely shattered that I'm not able to compete tonight," the former world number 13 said.
He has won the tournament once and has played some of the best tennis of his career there, according to Kyrgios. "All I wanted to do was come out here and give you guys a show, obviously just see what I'm capable of," he added.
Nick Kyrgios was then replaced by Adrian Mannarino, who overcame Gojowczyk in straight sets.
Nick Kyrgios is hoping to play the doubles quarterfinals
Despite withdrawing from the singles event, the Canberra native is hopeful about recovering when the doubles quarterfinal match takes off on Wednesday.
The Aussie wants to show up for the match where he is partnered with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis. Kyrgios won his maiden doubles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year alongside Kokkinakis.
Kyrgios is scheduled to participate at the Citi Open next week before competing at the US Open toward the end of August.
Nick Kyrgios reveals how he feels about Jack Sock as a doubles partner
Nick Kyrgios said he is excited about being paired with Jack Sock for the Washington doubles event but disclosed that he feels pressured whenever he plays beside him.
Sock hails as a four-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and is currently one of the best doubles players in the world, even though he is primarily a singles player.
Kyrgios and Sock started as a team in 2015 and have competed at least once per year in seven of the previous eight seasons. In 2018, the pair won the Lyon doubles title.
"I'll take it, coming from the guy who just made the crazy run at Wimby, one of the most talented in the world as we know," said Sock. He further added that they get along well on the court.
