West Ham forward Maxwel Cornet is optimistic the goals will begin to flow the floodgates after netting his long-awaited debut goal for the club.

Cornet joined the Hammers from Burnley at the start of last season but failed to score in his first 30 appearances before eventually breaking his duck in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Sheffield United.

The Ivorian coolly fired home at the far post to open the scoring but his side could not hold on in a dramatic ending at Bramall Lane, where Oli McBurnie scored a penalty in the 13th minute of time added on.

Cornet has struggled at the London club but wants his goal to be the starting point.

"I stayed on the back post, I stayed focused on the ball and I shot and I am really happy to score," he told the club's official website. "It wasn't enough to win the game, so we have to keep pushing and keep going again.

"The key is work, patience and I scored. I waited for a long time, I will keep going and push again to show again to the manager I can help the team."

McBurnie showed nerves of steel to convert from 12 yards five minutes after the decision was awarded by referee Michael Salisbury.

The striker climbed off the bench having overcome a troublesome groin injury, following a trip to Qatar to see a specialist.

And boss Chris Wilder says he has returned in better shape.

"He tells me he was in Qatar rehabbing, I hope he was!" said Wilder. "We've got some private security on him!

"He's been away for four or five days to see a specialist and he flew back on Thursday, trained on Friday. He looks and feels different to before he went on the plane so hopefully we might have cured a situation there."
