Real Madrid left completely desolated after a 4-0 El Classico loss to Barcelona
FC Barcelona's losing streak against Real Madrid CF was finally broken as the Catalan club defeated Real Madrid CF with a stunning 4-0 triumph on Sunday.
The win finally ended FC Barcelona’s five-match losing streak against rivals Real Madrid CF.
They maintained their recent momentum under the leadership of coach Xavi Hernandez and have maintained a chance of fighting for the title after a rough start to its first season since the departure of Lionel Messi.
It was their first victory against Real Madrid since 2019 and came with a surprise.
The absence of the league’s top scorer Karim Benzema due to a leg injury proved to be disastrous for Real Madrid CF, which had defeated its Catalan rival during the first league game at Camp Nou by 2-1 last year.
It was the first home loss for the club in 24 league matches since being defeated by Levante in January 2021.
Real Madrid CFdefender Nacho Fernández said, “We played poorly and they played well. Nothing worked for us. It was our first bad match this season. Perhaps we were too relaxed because of our advantage in the standings.”
Pierre-Emric Aubameyang continued his great streak since signing with Barcelona in the final minutes of the winter transfer window. He thrived during the match scoring the first and fourth goals of the match in the 29th and 51st minutes.
Ronald Araujo scored the second goal for Barcelona at the 38th minute, followed by the third goal for the club by Ferra Torres. Barcelona had several more opportunities to score throughout the match, but some of those good opportunities were missed by Pierre-Emric Aubameyang, Ferra Torres, and Ousmane Dembélé.
Since his transfer from Arsenal, Pierre-Emric Aubameyang has scored nine goals in 11 matches.
It was the seventh win for Barcelona in their last eight games across all tournaments. Sergio Busquets said, “Of course, we didn’t expect this scoreline, but we did everything we intended to do from the start. Everything went our way and we could have scored even more goals.”
The result moved Barcelona within 12 points of league leader Madrid with nine matches left. They are currently tied with Atlético Madrid for the fourth-place and are three points behind the second-ranked Sevilla. They will have the opportunity to further narrow the gap with Real Madrid to nine points if they win their next match against Rayo Vallecano.
Thanks to the victory, Barcelona has secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Xavi Hernandez’s coaching has brought renewed vigor to Barcelona. They have been aggressively attacking and have outscored their opponents by 24-5 over the last eight matches.
