Football News: Manchester United net goalkeeper Martin Dubravka
The transfer of Martin Dubravka, a goalkeeper for Newcastle United, to Manchester United has been officially announced
Erik ten Hag's team will have an option to purchase Dubravka when he finishes the 2022–23 season on loan at Old Trafford.
If Dubravka starts a predetermined number of Premier League games, Manchester United will be required to pay a £6 million option to buy price in addition to the £2 million loan fee.
It is expected that he will have to start a high number of games to fulfil this stipulation.
The veteran goalkeeper Dubravka was brought in as David de Gea's backup after making 127 appearances in the Premier League.
"To be joining Manchester United is a special moment in my career and I can't wait to get started and help the group achieve its ambitions," Dubravka was delighted after the Manchester United move was confirmed. "The chance to work with David De Gea, alongside Tom Heaton, is one that I am relishing."
John Murtough, Manchester United's football director, also commented on the move, "Martin has proven himself to be a top Premier League goalkeeper and his experience and personality will be a great addition to our strong goalkeeping group."
Manchester United have finally found competition for David de Gea
Having sent Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest for the 2022-23 season, Manchester United needed a new goalkeeper. Only Tom Heaton, who is 36 years old, was available to serve as David de Gea's backup.
United have been connected to many goalkeepers, including Alex McCarthy, Kevin Trapp, Yann Sommer, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Daniel Bachmann, and Giorgi Mamardashvili, before settling on Dubravka.
The Slovakian keeper first joined Newcastle on loan from Sparta Prague in 2018 and then signed permanently that same year.
Although he had a stellar career at St. James' Park for four years, he was recently replaced as their main goalkeeper by England international Nick Pope. The latter had signed earlier this summer from relegated Burnley.
In time for Manchester United's Thursday encounter against Leicester City, Dubravka completed his transfer.
With MSK Zilina and Esbjerg, respectively, Dubravka played in the Champions League and the Europa League. During the 2017–18 Premier League season, Dubravka started 26 games for Newcastle. And Dubravka has 29 international appearances to his name.
United have now signed six players this summer: Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, and Antony, a Slovakian international.
Antony's transfer to Manchester United was officially revealed on transfer deadline day, with the winger agreeing to a five-year, €100 million contract.
