    Origin of the club

The formation of England's oldest county club took place on March 1, 1839, following the creation of the Sussex Cricket Fund on June 17, 1836. The club was founded as a successor to various cricket teams, including the OLD Brighton Cricket Club in the county of Sussex. The club has participated in the County Championship since its establishment in 1890 and has always held the status of a first-class club.

Sussex played their maiden first-class match against Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's Cricket Ground in London on June 10-11, 1839. The founding goals of the club were to enjoy cricket while introducing the game to as many people as possible.
