Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is a first-class county club in the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. Known as the Gloucestershire Gladiators in limited overs forma
Origin of the club
In the early 1840s, the Mangotsfield Cricket Club was formed and in 1846, it merged with the West Gloucestershire Cricket Club. In 1867, it was renamed the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Despite the trouble caused by their rival, the Cheltenham club which was disbanded in 1871, Gloucestershire was founded in 1870.
Gloucestershire's initial first-class match took place against Surrey at Durdham Down in Bristol on June 2, 3, and 4, 1870. Dr Henry Grace and his brother-in-law Alfred Pocock formed the county club due to the strength exhibited by the players, especially his three sons - WG, EM and Fred Grace. WG Grace was the captain right from the club’s inception.
