Origin of the club
Essex County Cricket Club was formed at a meeting in Shire Hall in Chelmsford on January 14, 1876. The club achieved first-class status in 1894 and played its maiden first-class match against Leicestershire County Cricket Club in Leyton from May 14 to May 16 in 1894. They joined the County Championship in 1895 and showed gradual improvement in performance after several years of poor performances.
In recent years, Essex has won the County Championship twice in the last decade.
Essex Eagles in Vitality Blast
Essex Eagles have been competing in the Vitality Blast (The T20 Blast) since the first edition of the tournament in 2003. They won a tournament once in 2019 after defeating Worcestershire Rapids in the final at Edgbaston by four wickets. They have also made it to the tournament's semifinals on four occasions.
