WTA Miami: Coco Gauff sent packing, Elena Rybakina advances
Russian Anastasia Potapova came from behind to knock out sixth seed Coco Gauff, while Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula advanced at the Miami Open.
Potapova had looked on the brink of defeat in the deciding set, but won 10 of the final 12 games to progress to the fourth round with a hard-earned 6-7(8) 7-5 6-2 win at Hard Rock Stadium.
"I think I just let it go, and I started to focus on my tennis and going for my shots and not thinking what she is going to do," 27th seed Potapova said on the WTA Tour's website.
"I'm really happy to be in the fourth round for the first time. It's a dream that really came true. Coco is an unbelievable athlete and she has very good fitness. I'm really surprised that I could stay at the same level until the end."
Gauff felt she let the match slip from her grasp. "I just didn't play how I wanted to today," she said.
"Really where I got in the match was because of my mentality, but not because of the game. Physically I feel like I wasn't at my best today. I feel like it was a combination of nerves, playing at home."
Potapova will next face China's number 23 seed Zheng Qinwen who came through 5-7 7-6(5) 6-3 against 12th seed Liudmila Samsonova in a match which lasted more than three hours.
American number one Jessica Pegula, seeded three in Miami, had no such trouble as she coasted past Danielle Collins 6-1 7-6(0).
Poland's Magda Linette defeated former world number one Victoria Azarenka, the 14th seed, 7-6(3) 2-6 6-4 to also book a place in the last 16, where she will play Pegula.
Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko progressed with a 6-2 4-6 6-3 win over Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.
And Indian Wells champion Elena Rybakina fought back from the brink against Paula Badosa, saving a match point en route to claiming a thrilling 3-6 7-5 6-3 win.
