Wimbledon qualifiers: Johannus Monday and Toby Samuel take one step closer to the main draw
Qualifying action is underway at Wimbledon ahead of Monday's first round.

Johannus Monday and Toby Samuel were early British winners on the first day of Wimbledon qualifying. </p>
<p>
Monday, 21, has been a stand-out performer on the US college circuit and he came from a set down to defeat last year's boys' champion, Croatia's Mili Poljicak, 3-6 7-6 (4) 6-3. </p>
<p>
Twenty-year-old Samuel, another wild card, overcame a rankings gap of nearly 250 places to defeat Swiss Antoine Bellier 6-4 7-6 (5). </p>
<p>
But there were defeats for Stuart Parker, who won the first set against seventh seed James Duckworth before losing out 4-6 6-3 6-1, and Harry Wendelken, beaten 6-3 7-6 (6) by Italian Matteo Gigante. </p>
<p>
Players need to win three matches to secure a place in the main draw. </p>
