Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic forced to four sets in the first round
Top seed Novak Djokovic defeated Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the Wimbledon 2022 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England, on June 27
Defending champion Novak Djokovic gave a solid performance, but his South Korean opponent made good use of his aggressive playstyle to trouble the Serbian champion. Soonwoo Kwon was leading by a break in the first sets but could not beats the superior consistency of Novak Djokovic.
Soonwoo Kwon started well and raced to a 3-1 lead in the opening set. However, the Serb consecutively won the next five games to secure the first set 6-3. The South Korean broke Novak Djokovic in the second set for 3-1. He received from 0/40 down in the next game to hold as he converted his first set point.
Novak Djokovic regained his consistency and took control of the match in the last two sets. He won 86% of the points on first serve and 31 winners, including 15 aces, to advance to the second round after two hours and 27 minutes of play.
The victory improved the win streak of Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon to 22 matches as he aims to win his fourth consecutive title at Wimbledon and the second trophy for the season. He also improved his win-loss record against Soonwoo Kwon to 2-0.
In an on-court interview, Novak Djokovic said, "I've said this before, but this court is truly special. For me, it has always been the court I dreamed of playing and winning [on], and all my childhood dreams came true here, so it's an honour and pleasure to be back on Centre Court."
Novak Djokovic will face Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia in the second round of Wimbledon on June 29.
Casper Ruud notches maiden Wimbledon win
Third-seed Casper Rudd won against Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 7-6(1), 7-6(9), 6-2 on June 27 to secure his 150th tour-level victory.
The match had a cagey start as it had to be stopped twice because of the rain. The players were equally matched in the first two sets of the match and were sent into a tie-break. Casper Rudd dominated the tie-breaks and rallied from 2/6 down in the second one to take a two-set lead. He then easily won the third set 6-2 to secure his first grasscourt victory on his third appearance.
Casper Rudd has enjoyed a brilliant 2022 season despite having a poor start on the grass at the Queen's Club two weeks ago. He won the titles at Buenos Aires and Geneva Open, advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Miami Open and then played his first Grand Slam final at Rolland Garros, where he fell to Spanish legend Rafael Nadal.
Casper Rudd will lock horns with Ugo Humbert of France in the second round of Wimbledon. The Frenchman advanced to the second round after beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opener.
