Wimbledon News: Rafael Nadal edges Taylor Fritz and advances to face Nick Kyrgios
No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal won against Taylor Fritz of the United States 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(10-4) in an epic quarterfinal clash at the Wimbledon 2022 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England, on July 6
Rafael Nadal started strong and got a quick 3-1 lead but started suffering through an abdominal issue midgame. The Spaniard pushed through the second set while still feeling the discomfort but had to take a medical break at 4-3. He stayed aggressive after returning to court and broke the serve of his American opponent to win the second set.
Taylor Fritz was looking to give his best to become the first American man to advance to the semi-finals at Wimbledon since 2005. He took advantage of several unusual errors by Rafael Nadal to win the third set 3-6. He carried on with the momentum in the fourth set with his drop shots, but the Spaniard stayed persistent and regained control in the ending moments to force the match into a decider.
The dramatic fifth set was sent into a tiebreak after exchanging points until Rafael Nadal got a 5-0 lead before sealing his victory after four hours and 20 minutes of play.
In an on-court interview, Rafael Nadal said, "It was a tough afternoon against a great player. All the credit to Taylor. He has been playing great during the whole season. From my side, it was not an easy match at all, so I am just thrilled to be in the semi-finals".
Rafael Nadal will lock horns with Nick Kyrgios of Australia for a spot in the Championship match of Wimbledon on July 8.
