Wimbledon News: Ons Jabeur edges Elise Mertens and Tatjana Maria stuns Jelena Ostapenko
No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur started strong in the opening set and raced to a 4-2 lead
However, Elise Mertens fought back and made it 4-4, following which the match was sent into a tiebreak. The Tunisian got an early break, but Elise Mertens proved to be a worthy opponent as she dictated the play in the tiebreak. After a lengthy point-for-point exchange, Ons Jaberu finally got a breakthrough with 16 shot rally to win the tiebreak 11-9 after one hour of play.
The second set started similarly to the first set, with Ons Jabeur getting an early break only for her Belgian opponent to bounce back to level the score. However, Elise Mertens committed her only double fault of the match at a crucial stage, allowing Ons Jabeur to secure her victory.
In a post-match interview, No. 2 seed Ons Jabeur said, "Hopefully, I can continue the streak. I love playing on the grass. I love the connection between nature and me. Hopefully, it can continue to the final. She's a great opponent. It's never easy to play her. I had to dig very deep in the tiebreak. I couldn't imagine myself playing three sets against her.
Ons Jabeur will face Marie Bouzková of the Czech Republic in their first WTA meeting in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on July 4. World No. 66 Marie Bouzková advanced to the quarterfinals after beating the Bad Homburg champion Caroline Garcia of France 7-5, 6-2 in the fourth round.
Tatjana Maria stuns Jelena Ostapenko, British hope Heather Watson crashes out
Tatjana Maria defeated Latvian Jelena Ostapenko after bouncing from a set down to secure a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 victory in the fourth round. The 34-year-old German advanced to the quarterfinals at Grand Slam for the first time owing to her well-deserved win.
Tatjana Maria returned to court in March after a long break from her maternity leave. She had a solid start and broke the service of Jelena Ostapenko early in the game to get a 1-3 lead. The 25-year-old Latvian immediately bounced back to switch the momentum in her favour and got a 6-5 lead before serving out to clinch the opener.
The second set went into a tiebreak after Tatjana Maria saved two breakpoints at 4-5. The Latvian faltered on her serve in the third set and Tatjana Maria pushed ahead to secure a quarterfinal spot.
Home favourite Heather Watson missed out on a quarterfinal spot after a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Jule Niemeier of Germany on centre court, making Cameron Norri the last standing Brit at Wimbledon.
