Wimbledon News: Novak Djokovic on cruise control mode, but Casper Ruud crashes out
Top seed Novak Djokovic defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in a second-round clash at the Wimbledon 2022 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England, on June 29
Defending champion Novak Djokovic dominated the game from the beginning of the match as he struck deep and clean shots against World No. 79 Thanasi Kokkinakis on centre court to secure a straight-set victory. The 26-year-old Australian failed to match the speed of Novak Djokovic and crumbled under pressure as he was broken by the Serb in the second and sixth game of the opener.
Novak Djokovic built on the momentum in the second set. Thanasi Kokkinakis played the match better than in the first half, but the Serb constantly moved forward to dominate his Australian opponent. Novak Djokovic broke the service of Thanasi Kokkinakis in the third game and eased t a 6-4 victory in the second set.
Novak Djokovic carried on with excellent performance to race to a 5-2 lead with his precise serves. The Serb faced his first only breakpoint while serving out for the final point but held firm to record a straight-set win.
The victory improved the record of Novak Djokovic against Thanasi Kokkinakis to 2-0 to advance his campaign for the seventh Wimbledon title of his career.
In an on-court interview, Novak Djokovic said, "I' am very happy with my performance today. I thought I started very well, solid from the back of the court, and made him work for every point that I managed to get his serve back in play. I tried to work him around the court, bringing a lot of variety to the game.
Novak Djokovic will face fellow countryman Miomir Kecmanović in the third round of the Wimbledon on July 1.
Casper Ruud was knocked out of Wimbledon in the second round
Ugo Humbert of France ended the title bid of the third-seed Casper Rudd's bid to win the 2022 Wimbledon with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory on June 29 to seal a second-round spot.
The match had a slow start as Casper Rudd held firm in front of Ugo Humbert, who committed 15 unforced errors and won the first set 3-6. However, the Frenchman found his footing in the second set and overcame his Norwegian opponent with his aggressive approach.
Ugo Humbert fired 53 winners and broke the serve of Casper Rudd six times to seal his victory after two hours and 36 minutes of play. The Norwegian now has a win-loss record of 3-5 on the grass court. Ugo Humbert achieved his career-high ranking of World No. 25 one year ago but now stands at World No. 125.
Ugo Humbert will lock horns with David Goffin of Belgium in the third round of Wimbledon. The Belgian advanced to the third round after beating Sebastian Baez of Argentina straight to win the second round.
