Wimbledon News: Novak Djokovic defeats Nick Kyrgios for the seventh title

    Defending champion Novak Djokovic defeated Nick Kyrgios of Australia 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the championship match at Wimbledon on July 9 to clinch his fourth consecutive title at the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam

    The victory title victory of Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon tied him with Pete Sampras of America for the second most number of Wimbledon titles. The 35-year-old Serb is not just one Wimbledon title behind the record of Roger Federer and one Grand Slam title behind the 22 Major titles record of Rafael Nadal.

    Nick Kyrgios started strongly and put forth an excellent display of his variety of shots in the opening set. The 27-year-old Australian used an underarm serve and fired a 125 mph shot on his second serve at 1-1. He soon found his rhythm and broke the Serb in the fifth game to clinch the first set.

    Novak Djokovic failed to break the serve of Nick Kyrgios at their previous two meetings. However, he broke his serve of Kyrgios for the first time in the second set of the championship match to resist the early advantage of his Australian opponent. He then saved four breakpoints in the tenth game to level the match.

    Novak Djokovic maintained his momentum in the third set with precise serves and clean hits with his backhand. The Serbian great rallied from 40/0 in the ninth game after getting a crucial break to gain a two-set advantage. Nick Kyrgios tried to regain control of the match in the fourth set but failed to match the superb tennis performance of Novak Djokovic.  

    Novak Djokovic took advantage of his experience of playing under pressure as he went into a tiebreak to get a quick 6/1 lead to defend his title successfully. The victory extended his winning streak at Wimbledon to 28 matches.

    In a post-match interview, Novak Djokovic said, "I am at a loss for what this tournament, this trophy means to me, my team, my family. I have said this many times. It always has been and always will be the most memorable tournament in my heart. The one that motivated me and inspired me to start playing tennis in a small mountain resort in Serbia where my parents used to run a restaurant".
