After a rocky semi-final where they fended off five match points, Ebden and Purcell continued their final bid for four hours and 11 minutes to outclass Croatia's defending champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-2) in a gruelling battle. The Australian duo has previously been runners-up to Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis in the Australian Open doubles final in January.

They are the first Australians to win at the All England Club since Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge clinched their sixth Wimbledon crowns 22 years ago. The win also compensated for Ebden's mixed doubles final defeat with veteran Aussie great Samantha Stosur on Thursday. On the other hand, it brought Purcell his first grand slam title, while Ebden had previously teamed with Jarmila Gajdosova to win the Australian Open mixed in 2013.

Pavic played with an injured right hand.

Besides their semi-final miracle of saving five breakpoints, the dynamic duo additionally saved three match points in their tournament opener against Ben McLachlan and Andre Goransson. Ebden then paid tribute to the number two seeds mainly because Pavic played the match and carried on with a broken right hand after an injury in the semis. "It was incredible from these guys. They've been the number one team the last couple of years, and they almost beat us with an injury," Ebden remarked.

Australia's Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell sabotaged the Croatian duo Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic's Wimbledon campaign because they had won the title last year. The players found themselves in two tight sets managed by tiebreaks, and shortly after, the Croatians delivered the first break of serve in the match in the opening game of the third due to Purcell double-faulting and conceding the point.

The Australians then attacked at 5-4 in the fourth set, adopting varied tactics and placing their returns in a way that earned more winners. The final match in the men's doubles draws made history as the first one at Wimbledon to be decided by a 10-point tiebreak. Meanwhile, the Croatians concluded their 13-match win-streak after they entered the final at The Queen's Club and Eastbourne. They also pulled off an 11-match run at The Championships as the defending champs.
