Wimbledon News: Duos Elise Mertens-Shuai Zhang and Danielle Collins-Desirae Krawczyk make it to the semifinals of the women's doubles
Elise Mertens and Shuai Zhang entered the women's doubles draw semi-finals at Wimbledon without hassle. Top seeds Mertens and her Chinese doubles partner pocketed the match in two sets 6-3 6-2 against a Chilean-Slovenian duo, Andreja Klepac, and Alexa Guarachi
The winning pair hit one ace and made a single, double fault. However, Klepac and Guarachi made three double faults and couldn't hit any aces. The seventh seeds had a higher first-serve accuracy but couldn't score too many winners, unlike Mertens and Zhang, who scored more winners despite being just 67% on target for their first serves.
They secured 29 receiving points, and their opponent could only manage 12. The top seeds worked hard to sack 60 points and didn't let the seventh-ranked duo cross 38. The Chilean-Slovenian pair Alexa Guarachi and Andreja Klepac couldn't stop Mertens and Zhang in the quarter-finals, which led to a 6-3 and 6-2 victory. Mertens and Zhang did not miss a single set during their bid to enter the semi-finals. In 2021, Mertens crowned herself the first-time overall winner in London alongside Taiwanese Hsieh Su-Wei.
All-American duo Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk win the quarter-finals
Unseeded Americans Danielle Collins and her partner Desirae Krawczyk defeated Alicja Rosolska and Erin Routliffe, the 11th seed who've played well on the grass this year. They clinched a surprising victory 6-1 6-7 6-3 and set up a semi-final match against top seeds Mertens and Zhang. The win serves as a relief to American Danielle Collins, who became the highest women's seed to fall on day one at Wimbledon as she went down 5-7 6-4 6-4 to Marie Bouzkova on Monday. Australian Open runner-up Collins seeded seven, seemed ready for the second round but succumbed to the ways of the 66th-ranked Czech player.
In addition, she has also advanced to the semi-finals of mixed doubles along with her partner Neal Skupski as they look to defend their title. They will face Sania Mirza and Pavic, the sixth seeds, next. In the women's doubles quarter-finals tie, Collins and her partner didn't score an ace but made fewer double faults than their opponent. They also won 38 receiving points compared to the 11th-ranked pair's 25.
