Williams sisters to skip Wimbledon, Nadal takes a break and Navratilova tips Nadal to break her record

The third Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon, is less than a month away, and the new event will bear the absence of WTA sibling superstars Serena Williams and Venus Williams

Both of them have been plagued by injuries for several months now. Serena sustained a hamstring injury at the opening round match at the All England Club in 2021, while Venus is trying to overcome nagging injuries as the older sister has been out of the court since last summer. Their names were not included in the Wimbledon entry list, so they're not likely to show up at the event.

The American tennis icon Serena could have joined the tournament using a protected ranking. Although the 40-year-old can still participate through a wild card entry, her return does not seem probable. If the 23-time Grand Slam title holder fails to appear in any other tournament before or during Wimbledon, her name will be removed from the WTA rankings entirely in July, having not played for an entire year.

Rafael Nadal to catch a breath after French Open

Reports state that the 21 Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will utilise an extended break after the French Open and skip Wimbledon again this year. The news comes as a shock to the world, but the tournament, which has been robbed of its ranking points, will occur without many important players. Daniil Medvedev has been banned from playing, and an ankle injury afflicts Alexander Zverev, so the world's number one Novak Djokovic will lead the men's singles charge. On being asked about ATP stripping ranking points from Wimbledon, Djokovic said, When you make a wrong decision, there are consequences."

Djokovic has not appeared in the tournament after the pandemic and has managed to thrive in the sport despite suffering a chronic foot injury that has only worsened in recent months. He lost the quarter-finals 2-6 6-4 2-6 6-7 to Nadal, who will now target a record-setting 14th French Open and 22nd Grand Slam men's singles title on Sunday when he will face Casper Ruud.

Navratilova tips Nadal to break her record

Martina Navratilova currently holds the record for most singles wins at a Grand Slam event with 120 at Wimbledon. However, she thinks Nadal will break her record at Roland Garros. The Spaniard needs to play two more events after this one to achieve the feat, but Navratilova is sure that he will do it. She said, "That record will go down before Rafa is done for sure:), and I am so ok with it!." Nadal has 111 wins to his credit throughout his career, and he might reach 112 this year. He must participate in at least two Roland Garros events and traverse into the later stages to make it happen. He is gearing up for a summit clash against Casper Ruud on Sunday.
