Grigor Dimitrov arrived in Vienna after disappointing first-round exits at the Stockholm Open and Sofia Open. He rediscovered his momentum at the ATP 500 event to claim his 22nd victory of the season by beating Thiago Monteiro 6-3, 6-4.

The 31-year-old Bulgarian served ten aces, won 85% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of his Brazilian opponent two times from six opportunities. In contrast, Thiago Monteiro served nine aces, winning 75% of the points on the first and 44% on the second.

Grigor Dimitrov will lock horns with Andrey Rublev of Russia in the second round of the Vienna Open on October 27. Following a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, the 25-year-old Russian advanced to the second round.

Taylor Fritz edges past Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka

No. four seed Taylor Fritz of the United States increased his chances of qualifying for the ATP finals by securing a 6-7(4), 7-6(7), 6-3 victory over qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in the opening round of the Vienna Open on October 25.

The 24-year-old American lost the opening set 6-7(4-7) and was close to losing the match in the second set tiebreak. However, he upped his game to force the match into a decider by winning the second set 7-6(9-7).

Yoshihito Nishioka began the third set aggressively and raced to a 1-3 lead, but Taylor Fritz won the final five games of the match to book a second-round spot at the ATP 500 event after two hours and 45 minutes of play.

The world no. 10 Taylor Fritz is looking to win the fourth tour-level title this season, having already claimed the titles at Japan Open, Eastbourne International and Indian Wells earlier this year.

Taylor Fritz will next face Denis Shapovalov of Canada in a second-round clash on the indoor hardcourts in Austria on October 26.
