US Open: Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem makes a shocking first-round exit
In the first round, Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered a shocking defeat against Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan. The Greek secured not more than seven total points in the opening set against his focused opponent
Although it was tough for the Colombian, he converted his ninth match point and clinched a 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory in Louis Armstrong Stadium. Although it was not easy for Galan to find his footing, he gave a strong performance and reaped early benefits from inside the baseline.
The fourth seed turned the tables in set three with visits from the trainer during breaks and had his forearm checked. Tsitsipas regained control in the third set and was rallying hard to push the match into a decider at 4-2.
Unfortunately, Galan won five of the final six games, and Tsitsipas saved five break points at 4-5 besides another three at 5-6 before a forehand error by the fan favourite cancelled his chances of winning.
The 24-year-old missed the opportunity to become world number one by losing the bid. A solid run to the final or a title might have earned him the honour of becoming the first Greek number one in the ATP's history.
Galan, who did not drop a single set in the qualifiers, secured his first top 20 wins after seven attempts. He had previously defeated the number 23 Alex de Minaur at the 2021 Miami Open.
Tsitsipas drops to 5-5 in his US Open history and has not advanced beyond round three in New York.
Stan Wawrinka retires after two sets against Corentin Moutet
A top player who won't advance to the second round is the Swiss former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka who retired against Corentin Moutet after two sets in round one.
Wawrinka pulled out at the end of the second-set tie-break, earning the Frenchman a 6-4 7-6 win. After a weak delivery in the first set, he improved his style and gained more pace in the second.
However, both players held serve until the tie-break, where Wawrinka conceded set points, and Moutet finally won it 9-7. The exact nature of Wawrinka's injury is unknown, but he was facing with his finger and leg.
Despite his early exit, Wawrinka chose to fixate on the positives. "I see that I'm playing and feeling better. Even if I'm not winning yet, I know I will be back winning matches soon. That's for sure," he said.
As stated by the player, he would never regain his previous form because of his age. However, he still has immense potential, which inspires him to keep going.
Pablo Carreno Busta beats Dominic Thiem
Dominic Thiem competed for the first time at the US Open after his victory in 2020 but lost to an in-form Carreno Busta 5-7 1-6 7-5 3-6. Thiem has secured some excellent wins on clay, but his form on hard courts has lacked shine.
The Austrian was unfortunate to have met Carreno Busta in round one. So the wild card was enough for Thiem to win against a player who performs well in New York.
Thiem held a 2-0 lead in set one, but Carreno increased the pressure towards the end and won it 7-5. Thiem had an aggressive approach but didn't work in his favour.
Losing the first set crushed his mindset, conceding the second set 1-6. He took an early 3-0 lead in the third one and took it 7-5. Busta committed many errors but rallied back in the fourth set to secure 6-3.
