Gasquet trails Nadal in their Head2Head record of 0-18 across all tennis competitions. After losing the opener 0-6, Gasquet won a game in the second set.
However, Nadal tapped into his proper form and clinched the next five games to pocket the second set and lead 2-0. The former number one then let loose, and Gasquet challenged him to a more extended set.
Gasquet levelled at 2-2, and Nadal took time to get his mojo back, but he finished the set at 7-5 and won the match to advance to the next round. After the game, the Spaniard said it was the best match of his US Open 2022 campaign.
He believes he has made considerable improvement and said it was the "best match in the tournament, easy," Nadal remarked. "An important improvement. But I need to keep going."
"I know this is the right moment to make an improvement if I want to keep having chances to keep going on the tournament. Today was an improvement. I need another important improvement for the next day," he added.
Nadal's next opponent is American Frances Tiafoe in round four of the US Open.
