The Spaniard has reached the semi-final twice at the US Open. The world number 15 clinched his third consecutive four-set victory this week.

The 12th seed who won his first career Masters Series title in Montreal this year closed the match with a tweener that eluded De Minaur.

The Spaniard had overcome Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem 7-5 6-1 5-7 6-3 and bested Kazakh Alexander Bublik 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 in the previous rounds.

Carreno Busta will face No. 27 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia in the quarterfinals. Khachanov, who advanced after his opponent Jack Draper retired with an injury during the third set of their match, leads the two-match head-to-head 5-3.

He has won the last three matches between the two and holds a 4-1 advantage on hard courts.
