US Open: Nick Kyrgios stuns world number one Daniil Medvedev to enter the quarter-finals
Nick Kyrgios defeated defending champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-2 at the US Open and set up a quarter-final clash against Karen Khachanov at Flushing Meadows
The 23rd seed had a 3-1 ATP Head2Head lead against the Russians, who again lost to the Aussie in two hours and 53 minutes. Medvedev will slide down from the top spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings after the tournament.
Kyrgios, the crowd favourite, fired 21 aces and shot 53 total winners to win the match. "I want to go all the way," said the Australian, who plucked his third victory against a number one. "Hopefully it is possible."
He continued, "I was just having a lot of fun, embracing every moment out on Ashe today. Really proud of that." The pair met weeks ago in Montreal, where Kyrgios won in three sets.
Medvedev adopted a different response strategy than his method in Montreal and stood closer to the baseline. He pushed the opening set into a tie-break, where he rallied from 3-5 down to lead 8-7.
However, the Aussie used his drop shot in the tie-break's finishing stages, winning it 13-11.
Kyrgios couldn't keep his pace in the second set and played a poor opening service game, and Medvedev eventually led 5-1 before conceding two games and winning the set later.
The 23rd seed broke Medvedev's serve and easily played through the rest of the set. The Australian landed an early break again in the fourth set, and he converted five breakpoints in the entire match besides also saving five he faced.
Kyrgios will pair up with Thanasi Kokkinakis, who lost to him in round one, as they prepare to enter the doubles quarter-finals.
