US Open: Iga Swiatek cruises past Lauren Davis in the third round
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland cruised past Lauren Davis of the United States with a straight-set victory in the third round of the US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on September 4
Polish sensation Iga Swiatek is having a fantastic season, having lifted the trophies at Rolland Garros, Doha Open, Indian Wells, Rome Open and Miami Open earlier this year during her 37-match winning streak.
The 21-year-old Pole is looking to become the first player since Serena Williams eight years ago to win seven singles titles in a year.
Iga Swiatek lost her rhythm several times during the third-round clash against Lauren Davis but managed to bring her best game to the court at crucial moments to secure a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Lauren Davis won the first three games of the second set to build pressure on her Polish opponent. However, Iga Swiatek broke back to make it 3-4 and won the match's last five games to ensure her victory.
Iga Swiatek served six aces, won 73% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of Lauren Davis three times from 14 opportunities.
In contrast, Bianca Andreescu served no aces, won 57% of the points on the first serve, broke the serve of her Polish opponent once and committed six double faults.
After the victory, Iga Swiatek said, “I could not find my rhythm today. She played pretty smartly. I’m pretty happy at the end that I could put balls in. I’m just trying to enjoy any match, even when I’m not perfect.”
Iga Swiatek has now matched her best run at the US Open by reaching the fourth round and will be looking to advance to the quarterfinals at the final Grand Slam event of the year for the first time in her career.
Jule Niemeier beats Chinese sensation Qinwen Zheng to set up a clash with Iga Swiatek
2022 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier of Germany advanced to the pre-quarters after securing a straight set 6-4, 7-6(7-5) victory over Chinese sensation Qinwen Zheng.
Jule Niemeier had to fight through a tough challenge by her Chinese opponent in the second set to ensure her victory.
Jule Niemeier served six aces, fired 22 winners, won 76% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of Jule Niemeier three times from 11 opportunities.
In contrast, Qinwen Zheng also served six aces, fired 12 winners, won 74% of the points on the first serve, broke the serve of her German opponent two times and committed six double faults.
Iga Swiatek will lock horns with Jule Niemeier of Germany for a spot in the quarterfinal round of the US Open on September 5.
