US Open: First Round - Serena Williams wins, Simona Halep stunned by Daria Snigur
Serena Williams' Last Dance took off at the US Open as she defeated Danka Kovinic after displaying an improved performance compared to Cincinnati and Toronto
She registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory and entered the second round, where second seed Anett Kontaveit could end Williams' bid to make a deep run at the tournament.
The ranked player dispatched Jaqueline Cristian in the opening round. Williams made two double faults early on, handing Kovinic a double break point.
However, the American fended them off by rallying hard and hitting an ace the second time. The next game was crucial for Serena, who converted a breakpoint and maintained her lead at 2-0.
A determined Kovinic broke back as Serena's forehand crashed into the net, which was 2-1. The Montenegrin broke again at 3-2, but her affinity for hitting double faults allowed Serena to level the score at 3-3.
Serena held her serve in the next game and sealed a 4-3 lead, which soon turned 5-3. Kovinic lost nine straight points and crumbled against who hit Serena back-to-back aces.
She finally won the set in 55 minutes after Kovinic's forehand touched the net. In the second set, Williams broke serve at 2-2 to take a 3-2 lead. Ultimately, she converted a triple-match point as her opponent sent a forehand into the net.
Simona Halep loses to 20-year-old Daria Snigur
20-year-old Ukrainian Daria Snigur turned heads after besting Simona Halep 6-2 0-6 6-4 in round one. The former has an aggressive style of play and unique technique that adds depth to her flat groundstrokes.
The Romanian found herself scrambling from one end to the other in defence as Snigur took the upper hand. Halep made 11 errors in the 2-6 first set display.
Interestingly, she resurfaced in the following set, and Snigur missed every ball she attempted to play. The Ukrainian also served poorly and failed to win even a single game in the set.
Despite forcing the match into a decider, Halep started to make errors and eventually failed to topple the 20-year-old. Snigur was far from being nervous and kept hitting the ball with force.
She was positioned behind lines allowing her to look for more angles, and she won 6-3, although it took her three match points to seal the win against the bright Romanian who made her 30th unforced error and handed it over.
Bianca Andreescu rallies to defeat Harmony Tan at US Open
Meanwhile, Bianca Andreescu rallied from a set down to beat Harmony Tan 6-0 3-6 6-1 in the first round. Andreescu is known to complicate things on the court, which is why her second set loss was not surprising for spectators.
However, her first set victory against Tan was unusual for the same reason. She caught her opponent off guard and won the set 6-0. Tan's poor serve and lack of control over the ball elicited ten errors out of her in only six games.
The French player served better in the second set, which worked in her favour. Andreescu loosened her grip over the match and conceded 15 errors in nine games.
The final set was better for Andreescu, who regained focus and dominated her rallies. She hurried to seal a 6-1 third-set victory and won the match. However, the first-round showdown also brought prolonged issues into the light.
Despite being a good player, she lacks consistency which could affect her current US Open run.
