US Open: Daniil Medvedev sets up a match against Nick Kyrgios, who defeated wildcard J.J. Wolf
World number one and defending champion Daniil Medvedev will meet Australian Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round of the US Open. The Russian defeated China's Wu Yibing in round three
Medvedev dispatched Wu 6-4 6-2 6-2 to enter the second week for the fourth consecutive year. He won a 35-shot rally, the longest in the tournament so far, to hold his serve in the last game of the second set and close the match in one hour, 55 minutes.
The 26-year-old is trailing Rafael Nadal in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings and will slide down the rankings if he loses to Kyrgios in the next match. The Australian defeated Medvedev last month to extend his ATP Head2Head lead 3-1.
"We've played great matches. I think all have been tight on the scoreboard," said the US Open 2021 winner. "It's 3-1 to him, but I will try to do better this time, and it will be an excellent match for people to watch.
He is attempting to win consecutive US Open titles after Roger Federer won five at a stretch from 2004 to 2008. So far, the former hasn't dropped a set in this year's edition.
He will try to play his third final match at Flushing Meadows after challenging Nadal to five sets in the 2019 summit clash. Meanwhile, Wu is the first Chinese man in the US Open since 1881 to enter the third round. He is now number 129 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.
Nick Kyrgios reaches his first US Open fourth round
Australian Nick Kyrgios advanced to the fourth round of the US Open by defeating American wildcard J.J. Wolf 6-4 6-2 6-3. The Wimbledon finalist was backed up by his magnificent serve as he took the match in one hour and 56 minutes.
He struck 21 aces and hit more than 35 winners after finding momentum early on. He broke his opponent in the fifth game of the first set. Kyrgios then saved seven break points launched at him.
He has a turbulent history at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, where he was fined $7,500 for "spitting and audible obscenities" during his round two matches against France's Benjamin Bonzi.
He trailed 0-40 down in the second game in the third set but fought back to hold serve in style. He did not face a single-seeded opponent in the previous rounds, but reigning champion Daniil Medvedev awaits his appearance in the solid fourth-round clash.
