US Open 2022: Men who could become ATP no. 1 after US Open
While the ATP rankings remained stagnant after Wimbledon announced that no ranking points should be counted in the 2022 tournament, a slight change in the ranking was seen after the Cincinnati Open ahead of the US Open
Daniil Medvedev still holds the 1st ATP ranking even after Cincinnati after Nadal couldn't reach the finals.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has again placed in the top 5 after defeating ATP rank 1 Medvedev in the semi-finals.
Alexander Zverev maintains the second position despite being injured. Meanwhile, Nadal holds the third position and Carlos Alcaraz the fourth.
Here are players that have a chance to become ATP no. 1 in the upcoming US Open:
Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev is the current World no. 1 and has, in comparison to others, his chances of retaining his spot certainly more.
Medvedev needs to reach the finals to continue on the spot. However, if Tsitsipas, Zverev or Nadal win the finals, Medvedev will lose his place.
To have a clear chance of maintaining his spot, Medvedev will have to win the US Open title.
Rafael Nadal
Though Nadal didn't have a successful Cincinnati Open, he still maintains his third position on the ranking list.
The only thing that can stop Nadal from attaining the first position is if he loses the final to the current ATP no. 1, Daniil Medvedev.
All Nadal needs to do to go up by two spots is reach the finals of the US Open. However, given his current form, there is a chance that he might not.
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz, currently World no. 4, also has a fair chance of making it to the top of the ATP rankings as long as he makes it to the finals of the US Open 2022.
The only case in which even winning the final wouldn't get him to the top position is if his opponent in the final is Nadal.
Another situation that might prevent him from attaining rank 1 is if he lost the finals to Medvedev, Tsitsipas or Casper Ruud.
In any other case, if Alcaraz makes it to the finals, he will hold the first position on the ATP rankings.
