World No. 1 Iga Swiatek won against compatriot Magdalena Frech 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Poland Open at Legia Tenis & Golf in Warsaw, Poland, on July 27
Iga Swiatek returned to her winning way on the home court in Warsaw after Alize Cornet broke her extraordinary 37-match winning streak.
Iga Swiatek won the titles at Stuttgart Open, Rome Open and Roland Garros while dropping just two sets during her winning streak.
The victory against Magdalena Frech extended the win streak of Iga Swiatek on clay court to 17 matches and her overall record for the season to 47-4. She is the fifth player of the century to win 17 or more consecutive games on clay, joining Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Justine Henin.
The last loss of Iga Swiatek on clay came against Maria Sakkari of Greece in a quarter-final clash of the 2021 Roland Garros.
The 21-year-old Polish sensation dominated her fellow Pole Magdalena Fręch on the serve. She raced to a 3-1 lead in the first set before clinching the next five games to gain a one-set advantage after 30 minutes of play.
Iga Swiatek continued her winning moment in the second set and broke for 3-2 when Magdalena Fręch committed a double fault. She then won five consecutive games to secure a second-round berth.
Iga Swiatek served two aces, won 86% of the points on the first serve and broke her opponent's serve four times from seven opportunities to secure her victory after one hour and 14 minutes of play.
Iga Swiatek will lock horns with Gabriela Lee of Romania in a second-round clash on July 28. The 26-year-old Romanian bounced back from the set down to win against Raluca Georgiana Serban of Serbia 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the opening round in Warsaw.
