Tennis News: Swiss Open- Defending champion Casper Rudd beats Albert Ramos-Vinolas

    Defending champion Casper Rudd broke the serve of the 2019 champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas five times and finished the match with a second set bagel to secure a comfortable victory after just one hour and two minutes of play at the ATP 250 event.

    Casper Rudd started aggressively with explosive shots from the baseline to break the serve of Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second game to take control of the match. The 34-year-old Spaniard tried to roar back into the game with short balls but failed to match the forehand returns of the Norwegian.

    Casper Rudd won 81% of the points on the first serve, fired one ace and broke the serve of Albert Ramos-Vinolas five times off of seven breakpoint opportunities. In comparison, his Spanish opponent just won 57% of the points on the first serve and failed to break his serve of Rudd even once from four breakpoint opportunities. The victory improved the record of Casper Rudd at the Swiss Open to 7-0.

    In an on-court interview, Casper Rudd said, “I played really well from the start to the end. I got the perfect start to have a 3-0 lead. He’s always a tough player to play against. He’s a lefty which makes everything a bit complicated sometimes.”

    Casper Rudd will lock horns with Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the championship match of the Swiss Open on July 24. Both Rudd and Berrettini are aiming to win their third titles of the season and are unbeaten on the outdoor clay courts in the Swiss mountains. 

    Matteo Berrettini cruises past Dominic Thiem in Basel

    Matteo Berrettini of Italy cruised past Dominic Thiem of Austria in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to secure a spot in the championship match of the Swiss Open.

    Matteo Berrettini put forth an excellent display of explosive and accurate strikes to dominate his Italian opponent throughout the match. He raced to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening. Dominic Thiem tried to bounce back, but the 26-year-old Italian clinched the first set 6-1. 

    Seven-time out level titlist Matteo Berrettini got a quick 5-2 lead in the second set. However, Dominic Thiem broke back and clinched two points. However, the Italian roared back and won the second set 6-4 to seal his victory.

    The victory extended the winning streak of Matteo Berrettini since returning to court in June following a hand injury to 12 matches. The win also improved the win-loss record of the second seed against the 28-year-old Austrian to 4-2.
