Tennis News: Simona Halep makes tennis comeback alongside Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek
Simona Halep has recently confirmed her participation in a World Tennis League tennis event set to take place before Christmas in Dubai. Other players who will participate are Iga Swiatek, Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios, Elena Rybakina, and Alexander Zverev
The players seem excited about the development. "I like it most when tennis connects people and when it's true entertainment," said Swiatek.
"I can't wait!" Djokovic remarked. "I absolutely love playing in Dubai, I've had a lot of success there over the years and really enjoy the fans," he added.
Halep had decided to skip official tournaments in 2022 after a poor US Open campaign and nose surgery. "Having problems with the breathing for many years already and becoming worse with the time," Halep admitted.
So she took her doctors' advice and proceeded with the surgery, which was delayed so far because she couldn't find the required three months for recovery.
As of now, recovery is the only thing on her agenda. "What is sure is that this year I won't be able to compete in any official tournament anymore." She concluded that she still has many goals to fulfill in her tennis career.
However, the highly anticipated World Tennis League has introduced a change in her plans, and Halep could consider meeting some goals before the end of 2022.
What does Simona Halep's return mean for women's tennis?
The World Tennis League will occur between December 19 and 24, 2022. It will feature top tennis players worldwide, and it is no surprise that a recovering Simona Halep has been named on the list.
Halep was number one towards the year-end in 2017 and 2018. The Romanian was ranked in the top 10 for 373 consecutive weeks. Also, the two-time Grand Slam winner entered her 29th career semifinal at a WTA 1000 event at the Canadian Open this year.
The number is the highest of all time, ahead of Serena Williams (26), Agnieszka Radwanska (23), Victoria Azarenka (22), and Maria Sharapova (22). This proves how skilled she is at the WTA events.
The former world's number one now sits at the ninth spot. Her return to the court would pose a threat to the rest of the players in the top 10. "My 2022 season is not over yet. Who knows what will happen after I recover?" said Halep.
She believes she experienced many ups and downs in 2022, which could positively impact her future career. We expect a more experienced version of Halep to enter the court again.
The league will welcome a roster of established players as well as upcoming stars, and we can't wait to see how Halep fares after making her return after a much-needed break.
