Tennis News: Silicon Valley Classic - Daria Kasatkina bounces back from a set down to beat Shelby Rogers
Daria Kasatkina of Russia won the title at Silicon Valley Classic after beating Shelby Rogers of the United States 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2 in the championship on August 8
It was the fifth WTA tour-level title for Daria Kasatkina and the first since winning the trophy at St. Petersburg Open in 2021. The victory over Shelby Rogers was also her 200th primary draw victory on the WTA Tour.
World No. 45 Shelby Rogers dominated Daria Kasatkina with her excellent service and robust baseline exchanges to gain an early 5-3 lead. Daria Kasatkina fought back and sent the match into a tiebreak.
Shelby Rogers calmed her nerves and saved a set point before clinching the hard-fought first set 6-7(3-6) after one hour and 18 minutes of play. She fired 15 winners to 19 unforced errors compared to eight winners and 13 unforced errors by the Russian opponent to win the first set.
Daria Kasatkina discovered her rhythm and pulled off an impressive reversal from 1-1 in the second set. She dragged her American opponent into long rallies to tire her American opponent.
The 25-year-old Russia won the next seven games to clinch the second set 6-1 and get a 2-0 lead in the third before closing the match on the hardcourt in California after two hours and 32 minutes of play.
Daria Kasatkina struck 16 winners to 13 unforced errors as she took control of the game in the last two sets of the match compared to 12 winners and 20 unforced errors by Shelby Rogers.
The victory extended the win streak of Daria Kasatkina against Shelby Rogers to 2-1. It also helped her to move to the third spot in the race for the most wins on tour this season with 32 tour-level wins, behind Ons Jabeur and Iga Swiatek.
Daria Kasatkina will move up to the top ten on the WTA rankings for the first time since 2019 when the WTA rankings get updated on August 8.
After the victory, Daria Kasatkina said, “It’s a tough journey, which is still going on. I’m happy with the way things are going, especially this season, but I don’t want to stop because I made this mistake already one time. I don’t want to repeat it. I’m still hungry for the wins.
