Tennis News: Pablo Carreno Busta defeats Hurkacz to win his first Masters
Unseeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta won his first ATP Masters 1000 title after registering a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Hubert Hurkacz
After claiming his seventh tour-level title, he called it the best title of his career. The 31-year-old powered through his aggression and made competitive responses to win the last two sets.
He capitalised on the change in momentum early in the second set and earned his breakthrough in the third game of set three. He converted his third break point of the match at the National Bank Open, Presented by Rogers.
It has been a fulfilling week for the former world number ten, who landed straight-set upsets against Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner before dispatching eighth-seeded Hurkacz.
With six victories this week, Carreno Busta is now 28-17 on the season and is the sixth Spaniard to grab an ATP Tour title this year.
Hurkacz lost his footing in set two
The sixth game of the opener overpowered Carreno Busta. Still, after Hurkacz took the set with an ace, the Pole delivered a poor opening service game in set two, giving his opponent the advantage.
The first two sets were devoid of any more break points. Carreno Busta forced the match to a decider with an unreturned serve one hour and five minutes into the game.
After 40 minutes, he emerged as the Montreal champion. At the beginning of the decider, Hurkacz snapped up a deuce on return before Carreno Busta's scored a break in the next game to lead 2-1.
Carreno Busta turned the match over
The turning point in the match arrived when the Spaniard served at 3-2. Carreno Busta returned with his back to the court as he drove into the back wall with force.
Hurkacz, perplexed by the shot, backed up to let it bounce but instead allowed his opponent back into the point. The Spaniard then closed the match with a flying backhand-volley winner, prompting a frustrated Hurkacz to fling his racquet to the floor.
Carreno Busta was steady and equally efficient in his first and second serves. He won more than 70 per cent of points through both deliveries.
He tackled one break point in the match when Hurkacz dominated the opening set. After turning the tables in set two, the unseeded champion showed brilliance in converting points from attacking positions.
He secured all 16 points in which he derived an upper hand in attack in the set, crossing the Tour average of 66%. Meanwhile, Simona Halep defeated Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3 2-6 6-3 to win the women's singles draw.
