Tennis News: Novak Djokovic joins Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray at the Laver Cup
Novak Djokovic has confirmed being a part of the team along with Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal for the Team Europe at the Laver Cup to be held in London this September
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray have already confirmed their participation in the team Europe, while 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic announced his decision on July 22. It is the first time the 35-year-old Serb has decided to compete in the Laver Cup since 2018.
After the announcement, Novak Djokovic said, "It's the only competition where you can play in a team environment with guys that you're normally competing against and to be joining Rafa, Roger and Andy, three of my biggest all-time rivals. It is going to be a truly unique moment in the history of our sport."
The Big Four have dominated the top-level tennis competition since 2006, winning the singles trophies at 66 of the last 76 Grand Slam tournaments. They also maintained a tight grip on the top spot of the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings from February 2004 to February 2022, with one of them holding the rank of World No. 1 at any given time during that period.
11-time Grand Slam champion Bjorn Borg will lead the Europe team against Team World, led by John McEnroe, at the Black court in the O2 stadium in London in September. Team Europe has never lost at the Laver Cup. They won the tournament in Prague in 2017, Chicago in 2018, Geneva in 2019 and Boston in 2021.
The Europe team still needs two more players to complete its roster. In contrast, the World team consisting of Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, Taylor Fritz of America and Diego Schwartzman of Argentina needs three more players.
Bjorn Borg said, "Each year our goal is to win. With Rafa, Roger, Andy and Novak on the team. I like our chances."
