Tennis News: Nick Kyrgios roars back from a set down to take out Daniil Medvedev
Nick Kyrgios of Australia notched up another excellent win after beating World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the 2022 Canadian Open at the IGA Stadium in Montreal on August 11
Nick Kyrgios took advantage of the deep positioning of the reigning champion Daniil Medvedev with his trademark serve and volley to secure a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 victory at the Masters 1000 event after two hours of play.
The 27-year-old Australian took a 5-4 lead in the opening set but failed to convert on the two set point opportunities he had as Daniil Medvedev sent the match into a tiebreak and clinched the opening set 6-7(2).
This year's Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios calmed his nerves and showed remarkable resilience to roar back into the game in the final two sets.
He won four consecutive games from 2-2 in the decider to secure the victory as Daniil Medvedev struggled to find his top level.
Nick Kyrgios served 12 aces, won 82% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of his Russian opponent three times from eight opportunities compared to 13 aces, 75% points on the first serve and five double faults by Daniil Medvedev.
After the victory, Nick Kyrgios said, "This is the fourth meeting we have had. I have had some success against him in the past. But he's beaten me before as well. I feel like we know each other's games well. I am not the type of player that goes into this match looking at rankings or anything like that. It's just who I'm playing and what kind of ball they're giving me."
The victory improved the win-loss record of Nick Kyrgios against Daniil Medvedev to 3-1 and lifted him to World No. 31 on the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.
Nick Kyrgios will next face compatriot Alex de Minaur in the third round of the Canadian Open on August 12. The 23-year-old Australian advanced to the pre-quarters after beating Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria on August 11.
Beating the defending U.S Open champion Daniil Medvedev in Montreal has increased the expectations from Nick Kyrgios at the upcoming U.S Open later this month, making him one of the top contenders for the last Grand Slam of the year.
Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out of the Canadian Open by Tommy Paul
Carlos Alcaraz's run at the Canadian Open ended with a 6-7(4), 7-6(7), 6-3 defeat to Tommy Paul of the United States in the second round of the hardcourt event in Montreal on August 10.
The 19-year-old Spaniard failed to convert on the match point in the second set, allowing his American opponent to force the match into a decider before eventually clinching the victory.
In a post-match interview, Carlos Alcaraz Garfia said, "I felt the pressure to be the No. 2 seed in this kind of tournament, No. 4 in the world. It was the first time that I felt that pressure, and I could not handle it."
