Tennis news: Nick Kyrgios overcomes Baez to set up an encounter with Medvedev, and Taylor Fritz beats Andy Murray in Montreal
Nick Kyrgios has set up a second-round meeting with World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev on Tuesday at the National Bank Open, Presented by Rogers, after beating Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-4 to land his seventh back-to-back win
The Australian won his seventh ATP Tour title in Washington last week and brought the same energy to Montreal, thrashing the Argentine in one hour and 25 minutes.
He revealed that he is physically okay but is mentally exhausted. He is not well rested but is willing not to dwell upon it too much, as he stated during his post-match interview.
He wanted to compensate for all his previous misses in Montreal by setting up the match against Medvedev. He is looking forward to creating food memories in Montreal.
The 27-year-old has now won 12 of his past 13 matches besides having played his maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last month. Kyrgios will hope to maintain the same form against reigning champion Medvedev in the second round.
The 27-year-old has a 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head series, but Medvedev won their most recent encounter at the Australian Open in January. The Australian believes that the world number one has an unorthodox style of play.
It marks Kyrgios' eighth appearance at the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event this week, but his best result doesn't exceed a third-round set-up in 2015 and 2017.
The Australian was aggressive against Baez as he hit through the Argentine when he stepped inside the baseline during their first-round clash. The former spent double the time in an attacking position than the 21-year-old.
However, Baez has enjoyed a breakthrough season on the Tour by clinching his first title in Estoril in April. However, World number 32 couldn't tackle Kyrgios' powerful hits in the Canadian tournament.
Taylor Fritz beats Andy Murray in Montreal
American Taylor Fritz outclassed three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray on Tuesday night at the National Bank Open and reached the second round.
Even before acquiring a 6-1 6-3 victory, Fritz was a winner, and his solid serve pulled the rug under his opponent's feat. The American fended off the only break point he faced on serve while maintaining a steady attack.
Murray was panting early in the match as Fritz took control with each second and the former US Open champion worked even more challenging to score points. The 35-year-old couldn't breathe energy into his form and lacked pace against his younger opponent.
Murray's only response was adopting a defensive style of play which interestingly roped in 12 breakpoints. Although he saved eight of them, he failed to conquer Fritz's unyielding spirit. Fritz stood out in his return service games and wrapped up the battle in an hour and 27 minutes.
