Tennis News: New Stars after the US Open titles, Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz
With the conclusion of the US Open 2022, both the winners in the men's and the women's singles are young and have secured their maiden title in New York
While Iga Swiatek maintained her World No. 1 position, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest World No. 1 by winning the men's singles title at the Flushing Meadows.
This season of the US Open was exciting with respect to the men's ATP ranking in tennis because while Daniil Medvedev was holding the top position, all five players in the top 5 had a chance to secure the World No. 1 position.
With Daniil Medvedev crashing out of the tournament, in the beginning, the top spot had become available for whoever became the winner of the tournament. Carlos and his final opponent, Casper Ruud, competed for the top spot in the US Open finals.
While Swiatek defeated her opponent, Tunisian Ons Jabeur, in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(5), to lift the US Open trophy, the fight for Carlos for the title was rather tricky. Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz, hoping to become the new World no. 1, kept fighting until the last set, where Carlos defeated Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/1) in a match that lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes.
After the matches, Iga Swiatek congratulated Carlos and Ruud for a fantastic match. She tweeted, "Congratulations @carlosalcaraz and to you @CasperRuud98 as well! What a ride!"
In response, Carlos also congratulated her on her maiden US Open title. "Happy to win my first US Open the same year as you! Congrats, Iga!" wrote Carlos on Twitter in response to Iga's tweet.
Along with maintaining her position as the World No. 1 and obtaining her first US Open title, Iga Swiatek became the first Polish woman or player ever to win a US Open title. Furthermore, she became the youngest player to hold three notable titles since Maria Sharapova made the record in 2008.
Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz has hit the jackpot with the US Open 2022 men's singles title win. He obtained his maiden Grand Slam title, US Open title, and the ATP ranking 1 with this win. Moreover, this is his first world no. 1 ranking, and with this win, he became the youngest player to hold the no. 1 ranking.
Furthermore, he has also become the youngest player to win a Grand Slam title since Rafael Nadal, who won the French Open in 2005 and the youngest player to win the US Open title since Pete Sampras in 1990.
