Tennis News: Is it the end for Big Three supremacy ?
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the big three in international tennis. Their long-standing in the top 10 and relentless victories in the grand slam tournaments have earned them the title of one of the greatest players of all time
While the three have dominated the field of men's tennis for over two decades, the recent developments show that this golden age of the Big Three might be coming to an end.
Roger Federer hasn't been seen on court in more than one year now after he made his last appearance in Wimbledon 2021 and lost to the quarter-finals. In many interviews, Federer has also hinted at his retirement by telling the press that he's now focussing on his family and kids.
Rafael Nadal won his 21st Grand Slam this year after winning the US Open men's singles title. After that, he was seen in Wimbledon 2022 recently, where he had to pull out of the tournament at the semi-final stage due to a severe abdominal injury that he couldn't ignore. Though he showed an incredible fight in the quarter-finals and qualified for the semi-finals despite a severe injury and grave discomfort, he had to say goodbye to the Wimbledon 2022 title owing to the doctor's advice to rest.
Last but not least, Novak Djokovic is one of the Big Three to have shown some incredible performances on the court. He won the Wimbledon 2022 singles title this month after defeating Nick Kyrgios in the finals and is still going strong. Djokovic continues to play with the same stamina and prowess, but his decision to not get vaccinated for COVID-19 prevents him from playing many vital tournaments. He missed the first of the four grand slams of the year, the US Open and may miss the opportunity to play at the Australian Open this year unless he receives an exemption certificate.
Daniil Medvedev, holding the first position in the ATP rankings, is expected to take their place once the Big Three retire. In an era where every grand slam is expected to be won by one of the three, Medvedev has already won his first Grand Slam title by defeating Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open finals. Medvedev has maintained his top position in the ATP rankings despite being banned from Wimbledon this year.
Alexander Zverev, holding 2nd position in the ATP rankings, is another one of the greatest players who is expected to take over once the Big Three retire. He hasn't won any Grand Slam titles yet but has won two ATP finals. Stefanos Tsitsipas is another one in line to showcase his best skills once these three leave the court. Tsitsipas is in the fourth position at the moment, and these three and they're on court rivalry are likely to make them the new Big Three of international tennis.
