World No. 23 Pablo Carreno Busta arrived at Hamburg in good form, following a solid run to the semifinals at Bastad Open last week. He served four aces, won 91% of the points on the first serve, and converted five break points off seven opportunities to secure a 6-2, 6-1 victory against his 18-year-old Italian opponent.

The victory improved the record of Pablo Carreno Busta at the Hamburg European Open to 10-3. The tournament holds a special significance for the 31-year-old Spaniard as it gave him his maiden ATP 500 trophy.

Pablo Carreno Busta will lock horns with Alex Molcan of Slovakia in the second round of the Hamburg European Open on July 20. The 24-year-old Slovakian advanced to the second round after beating Marko Topo of Germany 7-5, 6-3.

Third seed Diego Schwartzman suffered a disappointing first-round exit after losing against Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland in straight sets. The 23-year-old Finnish sensation secured a 7-5, 6-4 victory to level his win-loss record against the Argentine to 1-1

Emil Ruusuvuori will face Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the second round of the ATP 500 event in Hamburg on July 20. The 20-year-old Italian booked a second-round berth after a hard-fought opening set clash against Dušan Lajović of Serbia.

Fabio Fognini beats Aljaz Bedene to earn his 400th tour-level win.

Fabio Fognini became the 14th active player to record 400 tour-level victories after securing a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) win over Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia in the Hamburg opener.

The victory made him the first Italian man in ATP history to reach 400 tour-level wins. He is followed by Andreas Seppi with the second highest number of wins, with 386 victories among active Italians. Three years ago, aged 35, Fabio Fognini won against Rafael Nadal on his way to being the first Italian to win an ATP Masters 1000 trophy. He also became the oldest player to break into the Top-10 on Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings in 2019.

In a post-match interview, Fabio Fognini said, “Well, I am 35 and, looking back, I have to say this is a great milestone achievement for me. For sure, I am happy.”

The victory of Fabio Fognini over Aljaz Bedene freshened up his memory of winning the title at the Hamburg European Open in 2013.

Fabio Fognini said, “We are in Hamburg, so I have to say something about this beautiful tournament. A long time ago, I made a really good memory, playing really good tennis. This, too, is one of the best.”
