Tennis News: Emma Raducanu debuts top ten rankings; Nick Kyrgios defends the British star
Emma Raducanu couldn't meet our expectations at Wimbledon, but the British star managed to climb up the WTA ranking due to other players dropping points
She is now world number 10 despite having had an awful season where she has lost 12 games and had just nine victories. However, it is her first complete season on the WTA Tour, so she gains points from the competitions that she couldn't participate in the previous year. As Wimbledon dropped points, some higher players lost their points, enabling Raducanu to move up one spot to number 10. She is the first Brit since Johanna Konta to enter the top 10.
Emma has 2717 points, and 2000 came from the US Open. She is followed by Coco Gauff, ranked 11th, with 2647 points and trails behind Garbine Muguruza with 2886 points. Although she is in a good spot right now, the pressure will increase during the 2022 US Open because she will need to defend at least some points to retain the 11th rank. If she fails, she could go through a significant decline in the WTA Rankings and slide outside the Top 50. Apart from that, the controversy surrounding her remarks on Nick Kyrgios has prompted him to speak up.
Nick Kyrgios takes a stand for Emma Raducanu after she receives criticism from fans
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has stuck up for Emma Raducanu after the British player was criticised for admiring his quarter-final performance at Wimbledon. After outclassing Christian Garin in straight sets, the 27-year-old had advanced into the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. The Aussie was in his best form against Garin, and the former maintained his composure throughout the match. Raducanu, 19, then used Twitter to praise his performance, simply writing "NK" beside a magician's wand emoji.
However, her fans did not take her post lightly, considering how Kyrgios was charged with common assault by Australian authorities, as confirmed on Tuesday. The allegations involve an incident with his ex-partner, Chiara Passeri. The news was followed by more controversies surrounding Kyrgios during the opening week at SW19. He was fined for spitting toward a spectator in his first-round match against Paul Jubb. He received a financial penalty for an "audible obscenity" during his clash with Greek legend Stefanos Tsitsipas.
In response to the media outrage, Kyrgios spoke up for Raducanu and then shared his opinion on her as a player." She's obviously going to be one of the most important players on the WTA Tour for a very long time. She's obviously capable of winning a Grand Slam at 18. She's very capable of doing that again," said the Aussie. He added, "I'm glad that I have those supporters. If she loves watching my tennis, that's great."
