Tennis News: Daniil Medvedev defeats Jainik Sinner in Vienna
Daniil Medvedev's rock-solid defense survived Jannik Sinner's high-octane attack on Friday at the Erste Bank Open. The 26-year-old Russian eased into a 6-4, 6-2 quarter-final win
Daniil Medvedev wrapped up the game in 91 minutes that centered around Jannik Sinner's heavy groundstrokes and the Russian's perseverance. Daniil Medvedev kept break points at bay and converted three of them against Jannik Sinner.
Their ATP Head2Head series record is now 4-0 in favor of Daniil Medvedev. "Jannik is a top player, and he can pose problems to anybody basically," the former number one said. He was delighted by his performance, which was evident in his words.
"I served amazingly well, I almost didn't do any unforced errors, I was solid behind the baseline. Everything was working well today and I'm really happy about it," he added.
Daniil Medvedev has the chance to book his spot in November's ATP finals by completing a winning run in Vienna. He followed his semi-final run in Astana three weeks back by entering the same stage in the Austrian capital for the first time.
He is the only player in the singles draw to have not dropped serve so far in the tournament. His next opponent is Grigor Dimitrov, who earlier edged past Marcos Giron in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 quarter-final victory.
Daniil Medvedev leads the Head2head series against Grigor Dimitrov by a 3-2 margin, but the Bulgarian snapped up the previous win at the Indian Wells in 2021.
"Grigor is the same [as Sinner], he is a top player, he can beat anybody," remarked Daniil Medvedev.
Borna Coric closes an impressive quarter-final showdown with a victory over fifth-seed Hubert Hurkacz
Borna Coric challenged Hubert Hurkacz to a lengthy three-setter and booked a semi-final spot with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) victory on Friday evening.
The result potentially ends Hubert Hurkacz's bid to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. He is ranked ninth as of now, 455 points behind Felix Auger-Aliassime and 50 points behind Taylor Fritz.
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Coric has claimed his first masters 1000 title (Cincinnati Open) after being sidelined due to a shoulder injury in 2021.
His inspiring second-round victory against second-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was followed by a hard-fought match where Borna Coric weathered a spectacular serving performance from Hurkacz.
With 28 aces, Hubert Hurkacz was looking to devour his opponent, but Borna Coric's determination witnessed him saving all four break points he faced in his two-hour 53-minute victory.
He has now entered his maiden semi-final out of four trials in Vienna. "I don't know [how I won], to be honest," quipped Coric. "He was serving absolute bombs, I've never seen that in my life. I was just hanging in there, focusing on my serve and trying to stay positive, because that's the only thing that I could do, and then hope that in the tie-break I could make some returns."
The Cincinnati titlist will now face Denis Shapovalov, who bested Daniel Evans 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals with hopes of reaching his second tour-level final of 2022.
