The 26-year-old Russian has reached his second ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season after fighting hard on Thursday's one hour and 45 minutes long thriller.

The top seed had collapsed hard against Nick Kyrgios in Montreal last week, but his form seems remarkably better in Cincinnati. Medvedev maintained a flat backhand that withstood Shapovalov's lefty serve.

Now, the world number one has a 3-2 lead in their ATP Head2Head series. He had won his maiden Masters 1000 crown at the hard-court event in 2019 before entering the semi-finals last season.

He has now started a bid to win his second season title this week, after his victory in Los Cabos earlier this month.

Medvedev will also retain his number one status in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings until at least after the US Open due to Rafael Nadal's second-round Cincinnati exit on Wednesday. Now, the Russian will meet Taylor Fritz in the next round.

Taylor Fritz sets up an encounter with the World No. 1

Taylor Fritz has entered his third ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season at the Western & Southern Open, where he thrashed Andrey Rublev 6-7 6-2 7-5.

The American, who beat Nick Kyrgios in the second round, stole the show with his defensive and offensive tactics to fend off the sixth seed's aggressive hits.

Fritz now leads their ATP Head2Head series by 4-2 and holds a 35-13 record on the year. After John Isner and Jack Sock, he is the only American to reach the last eight at three Masters 1000 events in one calendar year.

Rublev incurred a leg injury culminating in a medical timeout during the match. He missed a set point on serve at 4-5 in the first set but won the tie-break.

Fritz forced the match into a decider and broke in the 11th game of the third set before winning the battle. Rublev was aiming to hit his third Masters 1000 quarter-final of the year.

The 24-year-old defeated Fabio Fognini in the first round and reached the final in Cincinnati last season.

Stefanos Tsitsipas walks past Schwartzman in the round of 16

Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the quarter-finals after scripting a 6-3, 6-3 win against Diego Schwartzman. He has been a semi-finalist of the ATP Masters 1000 event in the past two seasons.

In early 2022, the pair competed in two neck-to-neck three-setters. However, Tsitsipas initiated change in the Ohio hard court by finishing the match in around an hour.

He now has a 3-2 lead in their ATP Head2Head series. The fourth-ranked Greek scored 14 break points and converted five of them. He has advanced to the last eight of the tournament without dropping a set.

Tsitsipas served for the match at 5-2 in the second set but fumbled with his backhand, allowing another chance for Schwartzman to overtake the Greek star.

However, the Argentine lost his serve for the fifth time in the next game and conceded the match. Now, Tsitsipas will meet American John Isner in the next round.
