Tennis News: Cincinnati Open - Andy Murray beats Stan Wawrinka after a 3-hour battle
Andy Murray whipped out a three-settler to register a first-round win against Stan Wawrinka 7-6(3) 5-7 7-5.
Despite having patchy forms, they played a good game. They struggled with injuries and took multiple MTO's. We witnessed both players receiving treatment in the third.
In the first set, Murray had to fend off break points, and Wawrinka did not squander a single game in the set. The Brit was smarter during tiebreak, waiting for his opponent to make mistakes besides producing a good service.
The second set was an ongoing affair until Murray began to face break points. He failed to save them, and the score was 5-3 for Stan. However, he conceded his own service game but later won the set 7-5.
The final set witnessed Stan with the 2-0 lead, but towards the end, Murray broke Stan and won the game after a few match points.
Cameron Norrie survives a close encounter with Holger Rune
Cameron Norrie persisted in the first round and defeated Holger Rune 7-6(5) 4-6 6-4. The Brit was the obvious fan favourite because he has not been consistent for the last few months.
Rune took the first break and led 4-2 in the opening set, but the Brit fought back to force a tiebreak where Norrie was steadier from the baseline.
His stability earned him the tiebreak 7-5. Rune slammed a ball wide and received a code violation for ball abuse. Rune took another break in the second set, but Norrie levelled the score 4-4.
Rune broke Norrie again in the next game and completed the set 6-4. The third set took off with Rune getting the first break point, but he couldn't hold his own and conceded in the next game.
Norrie couldn't keep his serve, and Rune scored the game, but the inconsistency of both players culminated in Norrie's escape as he won 6-4.
Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis start with a win
Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis defeated Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli 6-0 6-4 in Cincinnati. The Special K's returned to the courts in Cincinnati and took an early lead.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis maintained their rhythm and put immense pressure on their opponents. The Italians crumbled, and things Australians progressed for the Aussies.
They clinched one break after the other until the opponents were left with zero games in the first set. The second set took a similar path, but the Italians saved some of the break points they faced.
It wasn't easy, but they held their ground for a good portion of the set despite the continuous pressure from the Aussies. The Special K's ultimately got the break they needed and closed the match 6-4.
Kyrgios has secured 9-0 ins his last nine doubles matches.
