Tennis News: Canada Masters - Emil Ruusuvuori beats Stan Wawrinka to advance to the second round in Montreal
World No. 44 Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland won against Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland in the opening round of the 2022 Canadian Open at the IGA Stadium in Montreal on August 9
Emil Ruusuvuori came to the tournament following an excellent three-round run on the hardcourt at the Washington Open.
Emil Ruusuvuori played confidently to clinch the opening set 6-3. However, he lost the lead after he faltered in the second set, allowing Stan Wawrinka to send the match into a decider.
The 23-year-old Finn regained his momentum in the third set, saving the only breakpoint he faced and outmaneuvering his Swiss opponent to secure a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 after two hours and 12 minutes of play.
Emil Ruusuvuori served seven aces, won 77% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of Wawrinka two times from eight opportunities compared to four aces, 71% points on the first serve and three double faults by Stan Wawrinka.
After the victory, Emil Ruusuvuori said, “I grew up watching Stan and have huge respect for this guy. He is still such a tough competitor and has inspired so many people, so I hope he can continue to bring this level. I really enjoyed this match. It was a dream come true.”
It is the second time Emil Ruusuvuori has made an appearance at the Canada Masters, while Stan Wawrinka was making his eighth appearance.
Emil Ruusuvuori will lock horns with No. 8 seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the second round of the ATP 1000 event on August 10. The 25-year-old Polish received a first-round bye and will open his Canada Masters campaign against the Finn.
In another men’s singles clash, Alex Molcan advanced to the second round after beating Mackenzie McDonald of the United States 7-6(1), 6-4 on his Montreal debut.
The 24-year-old Slovakian will next clash with No. 4 seed Casper Rudd of Norway for a spot in the third round of the Canada Masters 1000.
