Tennis News: Austria Open - Roberto Bautista Agut beats Albert Ramos-Vinolas to reach the final
Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain secured a straight-set victory against compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a quarterfinal clash of the Austria Open Kitzbühel at the Tennis stadium Kitzbühel in Kitzbuhel, Austria, on July 29
It is the first time World No. 20 Roberto Bautista Agut has advanced to an ATP tour-level final on clay since losing to Matteo Berrettini in the championship match of the Gstaad Open in 2018.
Third seed Roberto Bautista Agut cruised through the opening set 6-3 and raced to a 5-2 lead, with a doubled break advantage in the second set.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas burst into action with several explosive strikes from the baseline to make it 5-4 as Roberto Bautista Agut missed out on three match point opportunities.
The 34-year-old Spaniard maintained his nerves to regain his composure. He converted on his next match point opportunity to secure a 6-3, 7-6(7-3) victory after two hours and four minutes of play.
Roberto Bautista Agut served three aces, won 72% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of his fellow Spaniard three times from ten opportunities. In contrast, Albert Ramos-Vinolas served two aces, won 57% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of Bautista Agut two times from three opportunities.
In a post-match interview, Roberto Bautista Agut said, “It was a really tough end. I served two times for the match, but unfortunately, I could not win. At 5-4. I had three match points and he played very well, so I’m very happy about this tough win on this surface.”
Roberto Bautista Agut is looking to win his 11th overall and second season title. He won his only trophy of the ongoing season at the Doha Open in February this year.
Bautista Agut will lock horns with the winner of the wild card Filip Misolic and Yannick Hanfmann of Germany, on July 30.
