Tennis News: 2022 Western & Southern Open ATP Entry list and Ranking
The Association of Tennis Professionals has confirmed the entry list for the 2022 Western & Southern Open. The competition is set to take place in Cincinnati, Ohio, from August 13 to August 21
Western & Southern Open, also known as Cincinnati Masters 1000, is one of the oldest tournaments played on hardcourt in the United States. The Masters 1000 tournament is the second biggest tennis summer tennis event in the United States and one of the main preparation tournaments on the surface before the beginning of the US Open.
2022 Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic has been included in the initial list. However, his participation in the tournament is not confirmed due to the Covid vaccine mandates still being in place in the United States.
The participation of the defending champion Alexander Zverev is also under doubt as he has not yet recovered from his injury. World No. 2 from Germany suffered from an injury due to a twisted ankle during the semifinal clash against Rafael Nadal at the French Open on June 3.
Alexander Zverev has taken a medical break from competitive until the torn ligaments in his right ankle heal. However 25-year-old German star has his eyes set on the US Open and is hopeful of returning to the tennis court soon.
In an interview with Eurosport, Alexander Zverev said, "The healing process is going very well. I am making important progress every day and I'm looking forward to the next tasks that will bring me closer and closer to the tennis court. An exact date for a comeback has not been set yet, but I'm working every day to make sure it happens as soon as possible."
As a result of Zverev's injury and the unclear status of Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud, Carlos Alcaraz, and Stefanos Tsitsipas will headline the event. Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios are expected to replace Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic once the final list is confirmed.
