Stuttgart Open: Matteo Berrettini outlasts Andy Murray to win Stuttgart Open title
Matteo Berrettini defeated Andy Murray of Great Britain 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the finals of the Stuttgart Open at Tennis Club Weissenhof on June 12
The 26-year-old marked his return to court with the Stuttgart Open title after missing most of the clay-court season due to a minor operation on his right hand in March. The victory of Matteo Berrettini in Germany improved his record on Grass to 28-6.
Mattei Berrettini started aggressively and broke Andy Murray in the third game of the first set to swing the game in his favour. He applied consistent pressure and struck with precise strikes to win the first set after 50 minutes. The second set was a cagey affair as Andy Murray fought back and pushed the set to 4-4. Murray had to take a timeout due to a medical issue. When Andy Murray returned to the court, his performance suffered, while Berrettini concentrated on his serve.
Mattei Berrettini struck with brutal power and showed brilliant footwork to control the game with his forehand strikes to wrap up the match against Andy Murray after two hours and 35 minutes of intense play. The win improved his head-to-head win-loss record against Andy Murray to 2-1.
It was Mattei Berrettini's second title at Stuttgart after previously winning the tournament in 2019. He now holds a 9-0 record at the Boss Open.
In a post-match interview, Mattei Berrettini said, "It is unbelievable. It was a goal, but I thought it would be tough. I don't even think I played my best tennis, but that is why I am even more proud of myself. Mentally I was really tough. I did an unbelievable job being there. I fought hard, and this means a lot.”
He further added, "My body is hurting a little bit. It had been three matches without matches and today was almost three hours, so I am feeling it.”
