San Diego Open: Brandon Nakashima beats Marcos Giron to win maiden ATP title
Brandon Nakashima won his maiden ATP title after beating fellow American Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-4, in the San Diego Open championship match at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, United States, on September 26
It was a fantastic week for Nakashima in his home city of San Diego as he secured a straight-set victory over No. 3 seed Marcos Giron to win the first ATP singles title of his career in his third ATP tour final.
The 21 year old American clinched the lone break of the quick opening set, which went without a single deuce game. However, Marcos Giron tried to fight back by dragging Brandon Nakashima into long rallies.
The player raced to a quick 2-0 lead in the second set. He dropped serve for the first time after Marcos Giron pushed back, winning eight straight points from 2-2 to regain control.
Nakashima was at the top of the game with his serve and clinched 12 of 13 points on his delivery. He avoided a cagey finish and held Marcos Giron with a love hold to close out the victory.
The excellent service of Brandon Nakashima helped him secure the crucial victory. He served eight aces, won 79% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of his compatriot three times from four opportunities.
Brandon Nakashima was thrilled after the victory. He said, "It feels like a dream out here, my first ATP title in my hometown. To be able to capture my first title here, it's unbelievable. The amazing atmosphere out here tonight, and I really want to say thank you for coming out and showing your support."
The young American has progressed 21 places on the Pepperstone ATP Live rankings to reach a career-high of World No. 48. The victory also bolstered his position on the ATP Live Race to Milan as he sets his sights on returning to the Intesa Sanpaolo next gen ATP finals this year.
