Tennis: Bianca Andreescu Comes Back in Action after 2021, Success and Struggles
Bianca Andreescu almost retired from the world of tennis but is currently motivated to shift the societal paradigm of how the sport is perceived. The Canadian tennis player walked into the scene in 2019, winning the US Open after a 6–3 7–5 victory over Serena Williams.
Her memorable run at Flushing Meadows was preceded by victories at the Indian Wells Open and Canadian Open. She consequently climbed to a career-high of world number four in the WTA Rankings.
Unfortunately, her injury sabotaged her career in the last few weeks of 2019 which is why in 2020, she appeared in a few matches and failed to defend her US Open crown. The following year, she competed in 13 tournaments and reached the Miami Open final, but was not in her best form. Her unimpressive record stretching two years left her at number 46 in the WTA rankings and also took a toll on her mental health.
Bianca Andreescu's comeback in 2022
After a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Germany's Jule Niemeier at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Andreescu spoke to the reporters. “I was struggling a lot, mentally. I wasn’t enjoying myself out there. Really, I identified myself too much with the sport, whenever I lost. It sounds a bit dramatic but I hated myself, and if I won, I loved myself, it was kind of like that,” said the 21-year-old Canadian. Although she made a comeback at the Indian Wells Open in March, she acknowledges the time spent away from the sport.
“I’m being really honest here, but I actually wanted to quit the sport,” she revealed to WTA Insider. “It was really bad. I am privileged in a way for having this opportunity and doing all of this. Now I’m very grateful, more than ever. So I don’t want people to think, ‘Oh you’re a little baby, just suck it up.’ But it was an accumulation of two-and-a-half years. A lot had happened and I just didn’t want to deal with anything anymore. So I realized that I really do love the sport and I do want to continue, but not just to win Grand Slams, or to do this and that. I want to do something bigger in the sport and I want to help contribute to a better world as well. I realize that tennis is my way toward that.”
Bianca Andreescu Excited to Play Again
After disclosing how her mental state dipped, Bianca Andreescu continued, “It definitely wasn’t an easy decision, but I told myself, ‘Look, I’ve been feeling a certain way for a while now. A month off isn’t going to cut it.’ I spoke to a couple of people that were close to me about it and some professionals as well. It was a collective decision, but at the end of the day, it was my final decision, obviously. But I think it really helped a lot. It really did. I’m very excited to play again. The last couple of months have been quite difficult but, as cliched as it sounds, I feel like I found myself." Andreescu is now participating in the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart and is thrilled to be back.
