Novak Djokovic is powerless to stop his ranking number from dropping; the Serb might miss US Open
Novak Djokovic will be dethroned from the top spot in the ATP rankings on Monday, marking the start of a steady decline over the next few weeks
Although Daniil Medvedev is exempted from playing Wimbledon this year after the All England Club decided to ban Russian players from competing, the Russian player will reclaim the world's number one spot on Monday. Instead of Nole, Alexander Zverev will be taking the second rank because he is about to lose the 2000 points Djokovic amassed for his French Open, and the next few weeks will shove him further down the rankings ladder.
The 2000 points secured from winning Wimbledon last year are also about to fall off his record, along with 1000 other points from 2019 frozen due to the Covid pandemic. Consequently, Djokovic will fall to number seven by the middle of next month. However, he maintains his stance on supporting the Russian and Belarusian players banned from playing at Wimbledon. He expressed his satisfaction in seeing players locking arms with the ATP to make the Grand Slam realise that the ban is wrong. Furthermore, the US authorities confirmed that international travelers don't need a negative COVID-19 test to enter the country but must be fully vaccinated.
Djokovic might not be allowed to play US Open
Djokovic's refusal to be vaccinated against Covid-19 means he will not be eligible to play US Open or other events building up to the last Grand Slam of the year. He could miss the bid to score 3000 ranking points at the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open. In addition, he may be out of the top ten of the ATP rankings by early September because he couldn't defend his Australian Open title in January. The Serbian has clarified that he will refrain from getting vaccinated despite the consequences.
Novak Djokovic may not be allowed into the States because the rule was entailing people to present a vaccination certificate before entering the country. He does not mind missing all the four major tournaments, even if he has to. He said that he believes in having the freedom to choose what he puts in his body, as stated by Djokovic in an interview after the Australian Open row. Novak Djokovic has already missed the Australian Open over the same issue and will most likely miss the US Open if the rules don't change in a couple of months. In addition, he missed the first of two hardcourt tennis swings in the US every year for the same reason. He was absent from two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, where he has won 11 titles.
