Nick Kyrgios and the ATP at Loggerheads
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been on the Tour since a while now. It has been close to a decade since he has been on the circuit. So far in his career, he has emerged as an unique individual.
The Australian star has been involved in some insane matches over this duration. He has registered wins over players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. In fact, he beat these guys in their first encounter.
Over the years, fans have been well versed with the manner in which Nick Kyrgios behaves on the courts. On more than an occasion, the 26-year-old player has been involved in unpleasant acts while competing in matches.
Recently, Nick Kyrgios was competing at the Miami Open. During the tournament, he was playing fantastically well up until the quarterfinal when he faced Italian player Jannik Sinner. When things got intense in that match, the Australian player got into an interaction with the chair umpire Carlos Bernades.
Nick Kyrgios did use provocative words and was dealt with a violation for criticising the chair umpire and smashing his racquet.
Speaking after that match, Nick Kyrgios defended his actions. He felt that he was unfairly fined for the consequences of his doing.
He's not even going to get a slap on the wrist for his dreadful umpiring performance today. Like, he was horrendous," said the Australian Open men’s doubles champion.
He was fined $6000 for his actions not just at the Miami Open but also at Indian Wells in the week prior. The ATP has warned him that things could go worse for him if such acts are repeated in the future.
These incidents shine a bad light on our sport. This conduct affects everyone, and sends the wrong message to our fans, especially young fans." said the ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi.
Coming to tennis, Nick Kyrgios has decided to compete during the clay season this year. Currently, he is playing in Houston at the ATP 250 event.
The main tournament on the clay is the French Open. The last time Nick Kyrgios competed on this surface was in 2017. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how he competes on this surface as he will have to adjust himself towards the conditions of this surface.
